How Ready Are Students For Live Learning Online?

In the past few decades, education has evolved drastically. Classroom-based classes have been replaced by online learning methods that allow for the flexibility of recorded courses and class meetings held via videoconferencing software that is real-time. However, even these online learning methods do not meet the needs of students who prefer the real-time interaction of a face-to-face classroom.

Live online learning is an alternative strategy to other online education strategies. It allows students and instructors to interact in real-time using videoconferencing programs like Zoom. The classes let students ask questions, resolve confusion and foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

While there are many advantages when it comes to live learning but it can be challenging for some students to adapt to this kind of online learning. This study examines the students’ ability to live learn and identifies the main factors that determine it. The results show that the most important factors that influence students’ readiness are motivation to learn online, self-directed learning capabilities. The researchers also conducted a multi-group analysis as well as a post hoc tests to examine the gender differences among undergraduate and graduate students, as well as sub-degree students. It was discovered that postgraduate students have greater readiness in most aspects of live-learning compared to undergraduate and sub-degree students.

It is recommended that instructors set clear expectations for what students are expected to be aware of and learn prior to, during, and after during a Live Session. This includes providing supplementary materials like summary, gist quizzes outline maps, concept maps and study guides. Additionally, instructors should create activities that build on the lessons that students have learned on their own, for example by studying, practicing, debating and analyzing.
